Cycling Jersey and Kit Design

This all began in 2009 when we were asked to design the club kit for a Cornish cycle racing club. Since then we have designed a dozen outfits for various cycling teams and brands. During this time we have gained a wide understanding of sublimation printing, in particular how colour reproduction is affected by the various fabrics and their different structures. It also helps that we have a background in road and XC mountain bike racing too.

Back

Few things are more instantly reconisable than the Rubik’s Cube, so being asked to create a cycling jersey for the brand was a real honour.
As straight forward as the design may seem, getting there was anything but, and mainly due to the curves of the jersey’s panels.
The key dictating factor being how to hide the full length front zip. Add to that the fact that if you make the squares too small it risks resembling a Mondrian pattern, something used to iconic effect by French team La Vie Claire from the 80s. Fortunately, there’s no mistaking the final product.

British Brands

It’s rather poetic that these cycling jerseys came about as the result of a conversation in a pub. Having created the first Stowford Press jersey as a result of that chat, it wasn’t long before Thatchers Cider and Wadsworth Brewery fancied having one of their brands on a cycling jersey too. Unsurprisingly, it’s the Wadworth 6X jersey that you see on the backs of Wiltshire’s cyclists, many of whom are keen supporters of the end product too.

A bit of digital painting required...

Unfortunately, Thatchers weren’t able to supply the artwork for the background of their Green Goblin label, so we recreated it from scratch, using nothing more than the label you see below as a reference.
This label also differs slightly from other versions of their branding, so a little artistic licence was required on our part.

Cycology Bikes Cycling Kit

This cycling kit design, comprising, short sleeve jersey, bib shorts, skin suit, track top and gilet was initially designed for Cycology Bikes’ own race team. However, the design was so popular with their customers that the short sleeve jersey and bib shorts were soon on sale in the shop. What started out as kit for a sponsored team turned into an even more successful bit of marketing.

Sunwise Cycology Bikes Team Kit

A cycling Team kit can be comprised of may pieces of clothing and gear, yet must remain consistent and be eye-catching to both the public and the riders. It also has to display the various sponsors’ logos clearly and in the correct hierarchy, that of prominence and space occupied. With ten sponsors and eleven articles of clothing, this was a bit of a headscratcher, especially with sponsors coming and going during the design process. One other key aspect, often overlooked, is that the riders ought to like the kit they’re being asked to wear; and they did.
