Working With Tarn Graphics

Like you, all my clients have one thing in common. They all need some sort of visual creation. Whether that be the creation of a logo for their company, a brochure or a small graphic to appear on a web page; each has its job to do. This understanding is at the core of everything I do at Tarn Graphics, helping to ensure that what I create for you really does work.

The Process
For some reason graphic designers are often viewed as an odd bunch, and what we do has even been referred to as a Dark Art by some, especially logo design. However, if you take the time to explain to your client what you’re doing and why, then anyone can understand the design process. The creative bit is still very much the domain of the designer, that’s how we’re wired-up, but the rest is quite straight forward.

Let’s Talk
I want to understand what it is you want to achieve. I also want to know about your company, who you are, what you do, where you operate, who your customers are, what those customers think of you and your products, and whatever else is relevant to the project.
At this early stage I find that a good old conversation is by far the best. Emails and texts can wait; for now, let’s talk.

Once we’re both happy that I have a good understanding of your requirements I’ll outline them in a written brief, which will be the reference point for your project. From here I will produce a selection of initial concept art-work, designed to get things going.
What usually happens next is a series of conversations as we discuss the concepts, likes and dislikes, what we want to change and alter, etc. From here we start to distil the concepts down to one, which can then be developed and crafted into your final design.

So what happens if you don’t like the initial concepts?
Not to worry, if you’re not happy with the concept designs then I simply repeat the process with you and work until we are all happy with the result. However, it is fair to point out that there are almost infinite variations on any design, but this is why we have the brief; to keep us all on track.
Although it’s rare, the brief itself can change as clients begin to think more deeply about their project once it’s underway. If this happens we simply produce a new brief and start from there.

How long does it take?
Approval of the concept sketches usually takes less than a week, depending how many people are involved on the client’s side. From this point, to your finished design, much will depend on how quickly we are able to move through the phases as well as gain feedback from yourself.
The timescale is very much affected by the type of project, but I will always suggest a suitable time-frame in which to complete the work.
Keeping in regular contact is also very important, and with all that technology has to offer us it’s nice and simple too. Telephone and email are the favourites, though text, Messenger and Skype all have their uses. Whatever the method, I will keep you informed throughout the design process.

What is the cost?
Depending on the nature of the project my time can be spent doing all manner of different things, from research, to visiting the printers to check proofs. Personally, I don’t think it’s right to charge the same hourly rate for the entire project, and a client never gets a clear idea of the overall costs.
So, once we have had a chat about your requirements I will give you a fixed quote for the entire project, which will be included in the brief. However, if you then wish to add to the project, I’ll simply give you a quote for the additions.
